Heather Canuel is a justice strategist, nonprofit executive, community researcher, and nationally recognized advocate whose lived experience has informed legislative reform, healing-centered education, and systems-change initiatives across Illinois and the United States.
As Founder and Executive Director of Art from the Heart, she develops innovative approaches to healing, youth empowerment, and restorative justice for families impacted by incarceration. Her work has influenced public policy, informed higher education in prison initiatives, contributed to curriculum development in correctional settings, and advanced narrative change efforts centered on the expertise of directly impacted communities.
Through research, advocacy, public speaking, and organizational leadership, Heather continues to build pathways that transform trauma into healing, lived experience into expertise, and community wisdom into lasting systemic change.
