Alexander Brown

Alexander Brown is a formerly incarcerated scholar, paralegal, and emerging leader in reentry and criminal justice reform. Impacted by both the state and federal legal systems, he transformed his trajectory through access to education while in federal custody, an opportunity he credits as foundational to his success.

While incarcerated, Alexander enrolled in a correspondence program through Adams State University, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree while also earning his paralegal certification.
He later used that training to successfully challenge and defeat two federal charges, one at the pretrial stage and another at trial, demonstrating both legal acumen and determination.

Following his release, Alexander worked as a paralegal with Cabrini Green Legal Aid, supporting advocacy efforts related to Illinois’ Clean Slate legislation, and later with the Cook County Public Defender’s Office, one of the largest public defense agencies in the country. He has also led and facilitated a decarceration fellowship for recently returning citizens, equipping participants with leadership, advocacy, and life skills for successful reentry.

Alexander is an alumnus of the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he completed the CRSS Success Program, earning a state certification that recognizes him as a mental health professional. He is also in the process of training, speaking, and facilitating at Northern Illinois University.

Alexander is driven by a core belief: “When you stop learning, you stop growing.”
