What You'll Learn

Key Takeaways and Objectives

Creating Learning Communities

Establish the foundations for building learning communities inside carceral spaces. Then, enter a facility to collaborate with student body representatives to bring these communities to life.

Using Humanizing Language

Delve into the intentional stigmatization that has shaped the vocabulary we use to describe people who are incarcerated, and learn to restore their dignity through person-first language.

Navigating Carceral Spaces

Learn the historical policies and legislation that govern prison structures and participating in practice scenarios will help develop skills to successfully educate inside carceral spaces.

Building Stakeholder Relationships

Learn about stakeholders in a HEP Program, how to establish cross functional relationships with them, and how to collaboratively balance academic quality and student experience with regulatory requirements.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions answered

Who is this program for?

This orientation is designed for HEP programs that are active or are ready to launch. We work with programs that are based out of colleges and universities, nonprofits, or correctional institutions.

We already have an orientation for our HEP program, but would like to have FICGN’s HEP Orientation as a supplement. Is that something you do?

Yes. We can work with you to ensure that your particular needs are met and that we effectively expand on your existing orientation programming.

My organization is exploring launching a HEP program or in the early stages of creating one. Can you help us?

At this moment in time, we are not helping design HEP programs. However, we encourage you to review the resources available at NASFAA and The Chronicle of Higher Education. We would be happy to work with you when you are ready to orient your first cohort of faculty, staff, and students.

I represent a correctional agency and want to learn how to engage students, prison administration and prison education staff in a learning community, does my institution qualify for training?

Yes, corrections leaders who want to learn best practices for developing a learning community at their  institution should apply. FICGN will work with your institution to identify core areas of support for students and staff.

I am interested in bringing FICGN to do a different kind of training for myself or my organization. Is that something you do?

Sometimes. We encourage you to use our Contact Us form to begin discussions around programs that are not related to the HEP Orientation.
